Phonics Denialists

2nd July 2014

The recent phonics screenings has resulted in a TES published letter to Michael Gove calling for the abolishment of the Year 1 ‘phonics check’. Signatories included the general secretary of the UK Literacy Association, the chairman of the National Association for Primary Education, the general secretary of NASUWT, and the chair of the National Association for the Teaching of English. In response to the letter, one well-known educational commentator (@oldandrewuk) tweeted “See some phonics denialists got a letter in the TES”.

There are plenty of protectors of the phonics approach, and one blog well worth reading is http://www.phonicsblog.co.uk/. The blogger Mike Lloyd-Jones explains;

''The level of anti-phonics hysteria has intensified in the last few years.  Myths, misunderstandings and downright falsehoods not only persist but proliferate. Phonics and the Resistance to Reading is a robust demolition of the arguments put up against phonics and an exposure of the damage and harm resulting from the longstanding muddle of teaching reading using ‘mixed methods’. The book exposes the dark side of phonics denial, its social costs and human consequences. It's available in paperback or as an e-book from Amazon.''
